The storefront of Cafeteria Capritxo in Son Armadams, Palma

A Morning at Cafeteria Capritxo

There are better known bakeries in Palma.

There are trendier bakeries.

There are bakeries with longer lines, prettier interiors, and far more Instagram followers.

This isn’t one of them.

And that’s exactly why we keep coming back.

Cafeteria Capritxo sits on a quiet corner in Son Armadams, just west of Santa Catalina. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably walk right past it.

That would be a mistake.

This was one of the very first places we found when we visited Mallorca. Nearly two years later, it’s still part of our weekly routine.

Not because it’s convenient.

Because it feels like ours.

Every morning, the bread is baked on site. Trays of pastries fill the counter while the neighborhood slowly wakes up. Parents stop in on the way to school. Someone grabs a loaf of bread before work. A few regulars linger outside with coffee before starting their day.

Nobody seems to be in a hurry.

If you’re trying to understand what everyday life feels like in Palma, spend half an hour here.

Put away your phone for a minute.

Just watch the neighborhood.

There are two things I tell everyone to order.

The first is the coca de trampó.

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the other “coca” everyone jokes about.

Think of it as Mallorca’s answer to a flatbread. A thin, slightly sweet crust topped with tomatoes, peppers, onions, olive oil, and whatever happens to be in season. People eat it for breakfast, lunch, merienda, or whenever they feel like it.

I’ve eaten more slices than I care to admit.

Capritxo makes one of my favorites anywhere in Palma.

The second is the carrot muffin.

Our daughter would tell you to order that first.

They’re made in house, lightly sweetened, and somehow disappear almost as quickly as they come out of the oven.

Every time we walk through the door, she checks the display case to make sure they’re there.

Usually they are.

Sometimes one has already been set aside for her.

The woman behind the counter knows our daughter’s name.

“Hola, Coco,” she says every time we walk in.

Our daughter immediately goes quiet.

She smiles.

Gets a little shy.

Then waves back.

It’s become one of those little rituals that you don’t think much about until you realize how much it means.

That’s the thing I’ve come to appreciate most about living in Mallorca.

Life here isn’t built around transactions.

It’s built around familiarity.

The baker is also the person you wave to on the bus.

The waiter from yesterday’s coffee is standing behind you at the grocery store.

The parents you see at school are the same people you’ll run into at the bakery on Saturday morning.

After a while, places stop feeling like businesses.

They become part of your routine.

Part of your neighborhood.

Part of your life.

One of my favorite parts of Capritxo is that the experience doesn’t end at the bakery.

Just next door is their café.

We’ll often pick up fresh bread and pastries first, then settle in for coffee while the morning unfolds around us.

There’s no itinerary.

No rush to see the next attraction.

Just another ordinary morning.

And somehow, those ordinary mornings have become some of my favorite memories of living here.

If you’re visiting Palma, go early.

Order a fresh barra, a croissant, and if they have it, a slice of coca de trampó.

And don’t rush back out the door.

Take your coffee next door.

Watch the neighborhood wake up.

If you’re lucky, you’ll leave with more than great bread. You’ll leave with a better sense of what everyday life in Mallorca actually feels like.

If you’re thinking about staying in this part of Palma, I’ve also put together a guide to the neighborhoods of the city, including why Son Armadams has quietly become one of my favorite places to spend a morning.
